Kingfishers climb into second spot

REDDITCH were far from their best but secured a 2-1 victory at bottom side Bridgnorth 2nds to move into second place in the West Midlands Premier Division.

The Kingfishers are only behind leaders Barford Tigers 2nds on goal difference – with both sides boasting six wins from seven matches – ahead of Saturday’s (1.30pm) home game against Edgbaston 2nds.

Bridgnorth defended stubbornly against a Redditch side who were missing a couple of key players and made tough work of converting their chances.

Andy Billingham broke the deadlock for the visitors with a routine deflection from a short corner but Bridgnorth equalised just before the break.

It took a lot of effort to break the home team down again and it was Adam Haslam who claimed the winning goal via a big helping hand from a deflection off a Bridgnorth defender.

Redditch 2nds won 3-1 against Old Halesonians 3rds but Redditch 3rds were beaten 4-1 by Bromsgrove 3rds.

Redditch Ladies were not in action but the 2nds were and returned to winning ways with a 4-0 victory over Kings Heath Ladies 2nds.

The Kingfishers welcomed a number of players back into their line-up and within five minutes Becki Clarke had set Louise Jennings up for the first goal.

An opportunist strike from Phoebe Kershaw made it 2-0 before half-time and second half goals from Clarke and Millie Melliard completed the rout.

Player of the match for Redditch, who were only denied further goals by an inspired Kings Heath keeper, was Lydia Hood.
